Why Does My Water Smell Like Rotten Eggs? Cause and Fix

Few water problems are as instantly off-putting as a rotten-egg smell. The good news: it’s a well-understood problem with a clear diagnostic path. Here’s how to find the source in a couple of minutes and what actually fixes it.

The short answer: A rotten-egg smell is hydrogen sulfide gas. To find the source, check where the smell is: hot water only points to the water heater (often the anode rod); hot and cold both points to the source water or plumbing bacteria. The fix ranges from water-heater service to an oxidizing filter or carbon, guided by a test.

The two-minute source test

Before anything else, figure out where the smell lives. Run the cold tap and smell it, then run the hot and smell that. This one check narrows the whole problem:

  • Hot water only? The culprit is almost certainly your water heater. A reaction inside the tank, often involving the sacrificial anode rod, produces the gas. This is contained to the heater, which is actually the easier scenario.
  • Hot and cold both? The hydrogen sulfide is coming from your source water or from sulfur bacteria in the plumbing. This calls for treatment at the water, not just the heater.

What actually fixes it

Once you know the source, the fix follows:

  • Water-heater cause. The anode rod may need to be checked or changed, and the tank may need flushing. This is a heater-service fix.
  • Source-water cause, higher levels. An oxidizing filter or aeration system removes the hydrogen sulfide before it reaches your taps.
  • Source-water cause, low levels. Activated carbon can handle lighter cases and also improves taste.

Is it dangerous? At the low levels that produce a noticeable smell, hydrogen sulfide is generally a nuisance more than a health hazard, though it can corrode plumbing over time and it’s genuinely unpleasant. The responsible move is to measure it and treat it. If your water also tastes off, see why your tap water tastes off.

Rotten-egg water smell: your questions

Why does my water smell like rotten eggs?

That smell is almost always hydrogen sulfide gas. It can come from a reaction inside your water heater, from sulfur bacteria in the plumbing, or from the source water itself. The quickest clue is whether the smell is on the hot water, the cold water, or both.

Is rotten-egg-smelling water dangerous?

At the low levels that cause a noticeable smell, hydrogen sulfide is generally more of a nuisance than a health hazard, but it’s unpleasant and can corrode plumbing over time. It’s worth identifying and treating. A test confirms the levels.

How do I get rid of the rotten-egg smell in my water?

It depends on the source. If it’s only the hot water, the water heater is usually the culprit and the anode rod may need attention. If it’s cold water too, treatment options include an oxidizing filter, aeration, or carbon for low levels. A test points to the right fix.

Why does only my hot water smell like rotten eggs?

When only the hot water smells, the reaction is typically happening inside your water heater, often involving the anode rod. That’s a good sign the problem is contained to the heater rather than your whole supply.
